Norwegian retailing and wholesale firm with over 1,800 grocery stores and over 40 per cent of the nation’s market share. Headquartered in Oslo, the company was founded in 1866 by Johan Johannson and is Norway’s largest retailer.
Originally established as a wholesale operation company called Joh. Johannson, the company opened its first two grocery retail partnership locations in 1869 and 1907. Throughout the 20th century, the company grew its wholesale business, eventually merging with regional retailers and forming large grocery chains in the 70s and 80s. Knut Hartvig Johannson and his brother, Torbjørn, inherited the business from their father and incorporated the company as NorgesGruppen in 2000. The company continued to acquire and partner with large regional chains, such as MENY, KIWI and SPAR. In addition to grocery and wholesale, NorgesGruppen is one of Norway’s largest property developers and specialises in retail chain locations. The company pursues a well-publicised operating model based on sustainability and the environment, including a 2020 target of using 100 per cent renewable fuel for their distribution.
