The conglomerate headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, engages in the production and refinery of oil and other petroleum products. The company was founded in 1992 by Wang Yung-ching (Y.C. Wang) and his brother Wang Yung-tsai (Y.T. Wang).
Originally established through a joint investment venture of Formosa plastics businesses and Nan Ya Plastics, the company is one of the globe’s largest suppliers of PVC and one of Asia’s biggest petrochemical producers. Formosa expanded locally and abroad throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, launching diversified interests in the computer components and power generation sectors. To facilitate the company’s chemical and petroleum transportation needs, Formosa established its Transportation Corporation in 1999. In 2000, the company became the first private petroleum product supplier in Taiwan. Formosa went public three years later, in 2003, when it listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
In 2008, the leadership of the company was passed to a seven-person committee that included Y.C.’s daughter Cher and two of Y.T.’s sons. The corporation’s principal holdings include Mailiao Power Corporation, Yungchia Chemical Industries Corporation, Mailiao Harbor Administration Corporation, Formosa Heavy Industries Corporation, Formosa Komatsu Silicon Corporation, Formosa Asahi Spandex Co., Ltd., Formosa Daikin Advanced Chemicals Co., Ltd. and Formosa Plasma Display Corporation.
