C&A is a Dutch clothing company with origins in Germany and the Netherlands that carries a long tradition dating back to the 17th century. C&A started as a small business in the German town of Mettingen. During the 19th century, the company capitalised on the industrial revolution and became a leading clothier. They strategically opened the ready-made clothing market to the European populace by mass-producing pieces and selling them for smaller profit margins.
C&A expanded its model of quantity and quality for an affordable price. Their foray into various styles saw the company develop several brands that cater to a diverse demographic. The combination of new styles and effective reinvestment within the business allowed C&A to expand to 20 countries throughout Europe.
Despite turbulent times during the war periods, C&A has remained a successful family business. Their largest store offers 20,000 different styles throughout all seasons. They currently employ over 35,000 people, of which 350 are designers, and their goal is to be completely sustainable in the near future. By 2020, two-thirds of their products will be produced with sustainable materials.
