America’s third-largest home improvement chain with over 300 stores spanning 14 states. Headquartered in Wisconsin, the company was founded by John Menard Jr. in 1962.
Growing from the demand for consumer, cash-and-carry construction materials in the American Midwest, Menards originally served the surging farming industry in the 1960s. The company expanded into building material manufacturing and produced products such as steel siding, roofing and doors for 30 years before selling the division in 1994. Menards innovated a delivery system based on centralised distribution that would later be adopted by its DIY home improvement competitors. During the 2000s, the company entered the big-box retailing format, opening several locations with more than 200,000 square feet.
Recently, Menards has positioned itself as the destination for low-priced home improvement goods. The company has diversified into self-storage, transportation and real estate segments.
