Magnit PAO, headed by Sergey Galitsky and his family, is a holding company for Russian retail and consumer goods giant Magnit. Their company operates through three types of retail stores throughout the Russian federation: convenience stores (13,909), cosmetics stores (4,847) and hypermarkets (467).
The company was founded in 1994 as a household chemicals retailer. In 1998, the company transitioned to grocery in Krasnodar. At the turn of the century, they rapidly expanded regionally and began establishing their name nationally. By 2005, they had over 1,500 stores and were a trading IPO.
After only two decades, Magnit became the leading retail grocer in Russia. They have also improved their retail chain by opening three new regional distribution centres for a total of 22 nationwide. Their distribution network is supported by a fleet of nearly 6,000 trucks.
The Galitsky family has intelligently stratified their marketing through varied store formats. They are able to cater to a wide spectrum of income levels with their products, which is one of the reasons why they are Russia’s largest retailer.
