Li & Fung is a Hong Kong-based supply chain manager for U.S. and EU brands in department stores, hypermarkets and e-commerce sites around the world. Founded in Guangzhou by merchant Li To-ming and English teacher Fung Pak-liu in 1906, Li & Fung was one of the first companies to be financed solely by Chinese capital to export goods to the West. Initially focused on trading porcelain and silk from China, it then moved into bamboo and other handicrafts, establishing their first overseas branch in Hong Kong in 1937, just as the Second World War intensified in China. Li sold his shares in the business in 1946, leaving the company in the hands of the Fung family, who had incorporated it in Hong Kong in 1937. Today, the company employs 22,000 people and had turnover of $5.8 billion in the first half of 2018. They currently have over 250 offices and distribution centres across 40 different markets and touch the lives of over one billion people. Apparel now makes up around two-thirds of their business, with home furnishings, furniture, beauty and personal care among the categories that make up the rest. The Li & Fung Foundation was launched in 2016 to deliver collaborative projects and partnerships that make positive impacts and that are scalable and sustainable.
