A world leading logistics company, the Kuehne + Nagel Group operates in the areas of sea freight, air freight, contract logistics, and overland transportation. Founded in 1890 by August Kuehne and Friedrich Nagel in Germany, the company is now headquartered in Schindellegi, Switzerland.
The company initially focused on cotton and consolidated freight in Bremen, Germany, and later expanded operations to the port of Hamburg. After co-founder Friedrich Nagel died in 1907, August Kühne took over his shares in the company. Kühne’s sons, Alfred and Werner became joint partners after their father’s death in 1932.
In the early 1950s, the company expanded internationally with offices in Toronto and Montreal. Branches in Italy followed in the 60s. During that period Alfred’s son, Klaus-Michael Kühne joined the company, representing the family’s third generation to be involved with the business. Klaus-Michael is credited for spearheading the company’s further expansions throughout European and the Far East. The company formed its Kuehne + Nagel International AG holding structure in 1975 and continued its strategy of growth and acquisitions. Kuehne + Nagel went public in 1994.
Today, Kuehne + Nagel International AG has over 1,300 offices in over 100 countries, and approximately 82,000 employees.
