Leading global technology group that engages in the environmental, energy, electronics, health, mobility and industrial applications sectors, Heraeus is headquartered in Hanau, Germany, and was founded in 1985. The company’s roots date back to 1660.
Pharmacist and chemist Wilhelm Carl Heraeus established the Heraeus company after taking over his father’s pharmacy in 1851. After developing a revolutionary method of melting platinum, the company expanded its business interests to precious metals, chemicals and dentistry. Wilhelm’s sons assumed leadership of the company at the end of the 19th century. Heraeus spearheaded technical innovations throughout the 20th century, including the development of a system for melting metal under vacuum.
The company expanded international in 1958, with offices in France and Italy. Foreign subsidiaries would follow in the USA, England and Japan. Representing the fourth generation of the family to lead the company, Dr Jürgen Heraeus created the holding company and reorganised the Group into five independently operating managing companies that engaged in the areas of precious metals, sensors, dental, quartz glass and specialty light source.
The company controls seven business groups today, with approximately 15,000 employees across 40 countries, and is one of the top ten family-owned companies in Germany.
