With 340 locations throughout Texas and Mexico, American grocery retailer H-E-B has ranked as one of the country’s top 20 grocery chains and one of ForbesTop 20 American Private Retailers. As of 2018, the company earned more than $21 billion in revenue and employed approximately 100,000 people. The company’s name represents the initials of Howard Edward Butt who, after a first failed attempt in 1919, successfully launched the chain in Del Rio, Texas in 1927. He quickly purchased three other stores and gave them all the name H-E-B. The company is currently headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. H-E-B often acts as its own supplier by operating several dairy and bread processing facilities. This enables the company to sell its own private-label brands with milk, ice cream and bread. H-E-B set out to stay ahead of the consumer curve by launching their Central Market stores beginning in 1994. Central Market offers a wide range of organic and international foods as well as import beer and wines. There are currently eight Central Market locations throughout Texas. Other product expansion stores include H-E-B Plus (launched in 2004), which offers non-food general merchandise, Mi Tienda, a Latino-themed store, and Joe V’s Smart Shop, a discount food store.
