GOME Electrical Appliances Holding Ltd. is a Chinese-based electrical appliance retailer, operating primarily in Mainland China and Hong Kong. Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Beijing, Gome has grown to become one of the largest privately-owned electrical appliance retailers in the region. Gome designs, produces and sells computer-aided design systems, electrical appliances and mobile phones and accessories. They have recently expanded their business model to include business management services. In 2017, GOME earned nearly 71.6 billion yuan. During the first half of 2019, the company recorded more than 34.3 billion yuan. GOME saw significant expansion over the past decade, with the number of retail storefronts skyrocketing from 859 in 2008 to 2,122 in 2018. In total, the entire operation employs more than 43,000 people throughout the region. The company was founded on January 1, 1987, when founder Wong Kwong Yu opened his first electrical appliance store. The company remained solely in Beijing for the next 12 years until it expanded to Tianjin. A key point of development came in 2006 when the business merged with China Paradise. Two years earlier, Gome was recognised by the Chinese department of Commerce as one of their ‘Key and Strategically Important Enterprises’.
