The Detroit-based Gilbert family owns Quicken Loans and the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball franchise. Daniel Gilbert founded Rock Ventures LLC, the company that would become Quicken Loans, in 1982 with his brother, Gary Gilbert.
Daniel’s Rock Ventures serves as a holding company for his portfolio of over 100 companies, yielding over $6 billion. His dedication to the city of Detroit is well known, revitalising large parts of the city through his investments. He is one of the city’s leading employers through his Rock Family of Companies.
A father of five children with his wife, Jennifer Gilbert, Daniel suffered a stroke in 2019 from which he has since recovered. His online bid-structure marketplace for sneakers, StockX, became a unicorn in 2019, achieving a valuation of over $1 billion in June of that year.
Daniel’s brother, Gary Gilbert, left the mortgage business he started with Daniel in 1999 and founded Los Angeles-based Gilbert Films. His producer credits include Garden State and Academy Award-winning film La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Academy Awardee Emma Stone.
