Cumberland Farms is a chain of over 600 retail outlets primarily scattered around the states of New York, New England and Florida in the U.S. Founded in 1938 by Vasilio and Aphrodite Haseotes when they purchased a cow farm in Cumberland, Rhode Island, they eventually grew it into one of the largest dairy farms in Southern New England. They opened their first dairy store in Massechussetts in 1958, followed by their first convenience store in the northeast in 1962. Expansion followed in the 1970s and 80s with the brand extending their offer to include gasoline. Later selling under the Gulf Oil brand name, which it bought the rights to sell under in 1986, it became a two-thirds limited partner in 1993. In 2016, it sold its share of the company. Considered a pioneer in the convenience industry, the company purports to sell nearly three million gallons of “Chill Zone” – an icy, sugared drink also known as a “slurpee” – per year, and is well known for its discounts ad campaigns featuring the likes of David Hasselhoff and, more recently, retired pro-wrestler Ric Flair.
