Compagnie Financiere Richemont is a luxury goods designer, manufacturer and distributer headquartered in Bellevue, Switzerland and founded in 1988 by Johann Rupert. The company operates through three segments: jewellery, watches and other fashion, which includes the company’s writing instruments business. Richemont’s prestigious brands include Cartier, Piaget, Chloé, Net-a-Porter, Purdey and Montblanc.
Spun off from the international assets owned by the South African, Rembrandt Group Limited, which specialised in tobacco, spirits and mining, Richemont’s initial holdings included Cartier Monde SA and Rothmans International. The company restructured in 1993, separating its tobacco and luxury goods operations. Through Rothmans International, the company expanded its international tobacco interests throughout the end of the 20th century, while acquiring luxury brands such as watchmakers Vacheron Constantin by Vendôme Luxury Group.
Richemont divested its tobacco interests through the early 2000s and grew its luxury goods business through acquisitions such as Parisian fashion house, Alaïa and watch case manufacturer Donzé-Baume. Today, the company continues to expand its E-commerce presence with the 2018 acquisition of YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP, a leading online luxury retailer.
