Media company with holdings that include Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Wired, the New Yorker, newspapers and the Bright House television cable system. Sam Newhouse founded the company, which is headquartered in New York City, in 1922.
The company’s name comes from its first paper, the Staten Island Advance, which Newhouse took full control of in 1924. More newspapers were acquired throughout the decades, as well as the Condé Nast Magazine Group in 1959. By 1979, the company owned television stations, magazines and 31 daily newspapers. The book publisher, Random House, was purchased in 1980, followed by the New Yorker magazine in 1985. The company continued to acquire magazines throughout the 90s and early 2000s. In 2010, GQ magazine became Advance’s first title available on the iPad. The company launched Condé Nast Entertainment in 2011 and aimed to create a variety of content, such as TV shows, web series and films. Today, Advance Publications is one of America’s largest private companies, with annual revenue of over $2 billion.
