One of Brazil’s largest industrial group of companies, Votorantim operates through its cement, mining, steel, paper and financial service businesses. The company was founded in 1918 by Antônio Pereira Inácio and José Ermírio de Moraes and is headquartered in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Originally established as a textile mill, the company sought opportunities in Sao Paulo and founded the Santa Helena cement works in 1936. The company expanded into synthetic fibre and steel production throughout the following decades, eventually diversifying into energy with its own hydroelectric facilities in 1955. By 1982, the Group had grown to include 92 companies with 60 factories and 54,500 employees, producing 35 per cent of the cement in Brazil. The Group’s investment banking business, Banco Votorantim, began around the same period. Today, the company’s portfolio operates out of 20 countries on five continents in the business segments of building materials, metals and mining, aluminium, long steel, electric power, orange juice and finance.
