Croatia’s richest family and owners of the nation’s largest supermarket chain, Konzum, in addition to the country’s largest privately-owned company, Agrokor. Ante Todorić and his son, Ivica, founded the family business in 1976 for the production of flowers and flower seedlings.
Ivica Todorić would go on to found Agrokor as a joint-stock company in 1989. By the late-1990s, Ivica had purchased or acquired several Balkan food companies. Ivica’s children, Ante, Ivan and Iva, later joined the family business and currently hold senior positions. In 2014, Agrokor bought 53.12 per cent of Mercator, Slovenia’s biggest retailer, for 550 million euros, amassing a large amount of debt for the family firm. The Todorić family has been implicated in highly publicised illegalities related to Agrokor’s attempts to mitigate their debt position. In 2017, an extraordinary administrator was appointed to direct receivership of several of Agrokor’s holdings.
