Saras was founded in 1962 by Angelo Moratti in Sardinia, Italy. Saras, which stands for Società Anonima Raffinerie Sarde, is an energy producer and refiner. In 1970, the company signed numerous contracts with oil extraction firms to refine their product. That same decade, they increased their capacity and added a new conversion unit, thanks to their partnerships. By 1980, their addition of continuous catalytic reforming and visbreaking units allowed them to create high-octane gasolines and reduce the oil by-product for more moderate distillates.
By the turn of the century, Saras began looking toward diversification. Their upgrade to an integrated gasification combined cycle modernised their energy production. Soon afterwards, they began investing in renewable energy sources, particularly the Ulassai Wind Farm. In 2019, they expanded the wind farm by an impressive 30 MW.
Thanks to decades of upgrades and technological advancements, their main plant in Sarroch is one of the largest refineries in the Mediterranean. They are able to produce 15 million tonnes per year and refine 300,000 barrels of oil per day, amounting to 20.5 per cent of Italy’s total refining capacity. Their wind farms currently service nearly 50 per cent of Sardinia’s electricity needs. The company’s continued energy diversification has positioned it well for its continued dominance in the region.
