One of Norway’s largest grocery chains with locations throughout Scandinavia and the Baltic region. The company operates through its five subsidiaries: REMA 1000, Reitan Convenience, Reitan Eiendom (Reitan Real Estate), Uno-X Energi (Uno-X Energy) and Reitan Kapital. Headquartered in Trondheim, Norway, Reitangruppen was founded by Odd Reitan.
The company opened its first REMA 1000 store in 1979 as a discount grocer based on the chain-store model that was being developed abroad. The REMA 1000 chain expanded to Denmark during the 1990s and later diversified through mergers and acquisitions, such as the purchase of Finland’s R-Kioski stores in 2012. Reitangruppen continued an expansion strategy that helped to build a vast network of convenience and gas-bar locations. Reitangruppen operates 3,804 stores and employs nearly 38,000 individuals, bringing in revenue of over $9 billion. Odd Reitan remains the company’s sole owner and serves as CEO and chairman. His eldest son, Ole Robert, serves as CEO and head of REMA 1000, and his youngest son, Magnus, is CEO and head of Reitan Kapital.
