Ruben Rausing was the founder of famous international food processing and packaging giant Tetra Pak. Rausing studied at both Stockholm School of Economics and Business Administration and Columbia University to acquire the business acumen needed to start his business. The Rausing family holdings and fortune were inherited by Ruben’s sons Hans and Gad upon his death in 1983.
Just over a decade later, Hans sold his share to his brother Gad, making him the majority shareholder of the conglomerate Tetra Laval. Though Swedish, the majority of the family resides in the United Kingdom, where they are involved in animal husbandry and horse breeding.
The Rausing family is widely known for their dramatic history. The children of Gad Rausing became the de facto leaders of Tetra Laval. They still manage the affairs of the family business to this day. Hans’s children have not all been as fortunate.
In general, the Rausings are known for their consistent philanthropic efforts. Hans Kristian, the son of Hans, and his wife Eva committed their own funds to several charities. In spite of their efforts, they became widely known for their addiction to crack cocaine, and Hans was consequently arrested in 2012 for hiding the body of Eva following her overdose.
