Phoenix Pharmahendel is Germany’s largest pharmaceutical wholesaler, earning just under €25 billion through the 2017-18 fiscal year. Headquartered in Mannheim, Germany, the company has grown to dominate the European market since its founding in 1994. After just under 25 years, Phoenix Pharmahendel deals with 200 manufacturers through 164 distribution centres, serving 2,500 of their own pharmacies. In total, they register more than 140,000,000 patient contacts through 14 European countries every year. The company was founded by Adolf Merckle, who built it from the chemical wholesaling operation his grandfather started years before. Not long after its launch, Phoenix Pharmahandel soon began acquiring pharmaceutical companies in Hungary, Italy and The Netherlands. Currently, the entire Phoenix Pharmahandel operation employs more than 36,300 people worldwide. In 2009, Ludwig Merckle succeeded his father at the helm of the company and set about on a strategy of consolidation which has kept the company at the top of their field. In 2017, Phoenix Pharmahandel launched an initiative called Livplus, which sought to strengthen local independent pharmacies by offering special rates and preferential access to their LIVSANE product line. In January 2019, the company celebrated a milestone when they opened their 2,500th pharmacy, which is located in Prague.
