MSC is the world’s second-largest shipping line by container volume — second only to A.P Moller Maersk — and operates nearly 500 vessels that dock in every one of the world’s major ports. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the company was founded in 1970 by Gianluigi Aponte and his wife Rafael in Naples, Italy, after he purchased one small ship while still working as a ferry boat captain. Now with offices in 155 countries, the company employs over 24,000 people across its various divisions, including one of the world’s most luxurious cruise fleets, which began with the company’s purchase of Lauro Lines in 1988. In addition to the container and cruiseliner businesses, since 2000, the company has operated Terminal Investment Limited, now one of the biggest port terminal operators in the world. In 2015, the company’s revenue was $28.19 billion.
