The Koo family is best known for founding and growing the South Korean Electronics conglomerate LG Corporation in 1947. Koo Cha-kyung was instrumental in growing the business and expanding it from a chemical company into a multinational entity with divisions in home electronics, mobile tech and business solutions. Koo Cha-kyung was succeeded by his son Koo Bon-moo, who served as chairman of the corporation from 1995 until his death in 2018. Koo Bon-moo started in the company in LG chemicals in 1975. In 1980, he was transferred to Goldstar, where he headed the Tokyo office in the mid-1980s. With the premature death of his only son and male heir in 2004, he adopted his youngest brother’s son, Koo Kwang-mo, and groomed him to one day take over the business. Koo Kwang-mo was installed as CEO in June of 2018. The Koo family was listed on Forbes Richest Asian Families list at number 28 with an estimated net worth of 8.7 billion dollars.
