Henkel AG & Co. is a global manufacturer and distributor of cleaning, adhesive and beauty care products, headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany. Founded in 1876, today the company produces popular home product brands such as Schwarzkopf, Dial, Persil and All.
In 1876 Fritz Henkel established the company in Germany, then known as Henkel & Cie in Aachen, with two partners. Their first product was a universal detergent based on silicate that they called “Universal-Washmittel”. Henkel relocated the company to Dusseldorf two years later, in 1878, after the success of its first company-branded cleaning solution “Henkel’s Bleich-Soda”.
In 1907, Henkel launched Persil, the world’s first self-acting laundry detergent, and entered the adhesive market in 1922. The company’s portfolio grew to include industrial cleaners during the 30s, and the third generation of the Henkel family took over management of the company in 1938.
The company became Henkel Kommanditgesellschaft auf Aktien (KGaA), a limited corporation based on shares, in 1975 and went public in 1985. Henkel acquired the Schwarzkopf brand in 1995 and Dial in 2004. Today, Persil is Germany’s no. 1 laundry detergent and one of the top brands in the global laundry care industry.
