Hellenic Petroleum SA is Greece’s largest oil refiner and distributor. The group is also Greece’s only producer of petrochemical products. The company operates three refineries in Greece, accounting for 60 per cent of their profit. The majority of their remaining sales are through the sales of petroleum products across a network of over 2,000 service stations. The group operates throughout Greece, the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe.
The company started in 1955 with the deal signing for the Aspropyrgos refinery – the first in Greece. Just three years later, the refinery was in full operation. By the 1970s, the Greek State became heavily involved in the petroleum industry, which became state-regulated. The Latsis family controlled the company until the Government gained possession. For the next 30 years, the Greek State acquired various private holdings in the petroleum industry, including Esso and Petrolla Hellas SA.
Since the turn of 21 century, the company has been investing in alternative energy sources. They have acquired natural gas resources. Their construction of two combined cycle gas turbines has diversified their power generation sector and added more environmentally friendly technology to their portfolio. In 2017, the company ranked as one of the 100 global energy leaders. Their 2019 profits reached €830 million, an all-time high for the company.
