Grupo México is a Mexican mining and logistics operation that currently runs the world’s third-largest copper mining outfit. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in Mexico City, the business also holds the claim to fame of operating Mexico’s largest rail fleet through its transport division, Ferrocarril Mexicano (Ferromex). Grupo México earned approximately $10.5 billion in sales in 2018 and employs approximately 30,000 people. The company’s mining division has interests in the U.S., Mexico, Peru and Spain. Grupo México’s other business interests include a Mexican railroad operator, engineering and construction operation, as well as an oil-drilling company. The company was founded by Raul Antonio Escobedo and Larrea Mota-Velasco. By the year 2000, Grupo México was responsible for 87.5 per cent of Mexico’s copper production and rose in the ranks to become the third-largest copper producer. Today, Grupo México is the top-ranked copper producer in Mexico and Peru and is the third-ranked producer in the U.S. The engineering and construction wing has been responsible for much of the civic infrastructure and industrial plant construction over the past several decades. They have built more than 200 works in 24 states throughout Mexico.
