America’s largest rental car business, with over 10,000 locations, is the parent company of brands Enterprise, Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car. Founded by Jack Crawford Taylor in 1957, the company remains headquartered in St Louis, Missouri.
Originally established as Executive Leasing with a fleet of seven cars, Taylor renamed the company Enterprise in 1969, after the ship he had served on during World War II. By 1970, the company had adopted a strategy of offering car rentals from neighbourhood locations, which differed from the competition’s airport-lot business model. Enterprise would open its first airport rental location at Denver International Airport in 1995.
Enterprise Holding was formed in 2009 after the 2007 acquisition of the Vanguard Automotive Group, which was the parent company of National Car Rental and Alamo Rent a Car. In 2015, Enterprise reacquired the rights to operate the National and Alamo brands throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Additionally, new franchises were added in Sweden, Norway, Romania, Albania, Slovenia, Serbia, Iceland, Denmark, Montenegro, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
Enterprise Holdings ranked #13 on Forbes’s list of America’s Largest Private Companies in 2018 and remains family-owned.
