Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Co. Ltd. is an agro-industrial and food business that operates through its livestock, animal feed and food segments. Headquartered in Bangkok, the company was founded in 1978 by Dhanin Chearavanont.
The business began as a seed shop serving Thai farmers in 1921. Started by brothers Chia Ek Chor and Choncharoen Chiaravanont, it was Ek Chor’s youngest son, Dhanin, that grew his family’s business group into the largest private company in Thailand, with Charoen Pokphand Foods representing the flagship operation. The company went public on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 1987 and expanded through several animal feed and food production company acquisitions throughout the end of the 20th century.
CP Foods extended its international business with investments in China, UK, Turkey and Malaysia, manufacturing and distribution networks through the early 2000s. The company diversified into the ready-made food sector with its acquisition of food kiosk chain Five Star in 2005. Global expansion in the livestock, animal feed and food industry continued through the next decade. Dhanin Chearavanont stepped down as CP’s Chairman and CEO in 2017, turning the positions over to his sons, Soopakij and Suphachai. Today, Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Co. Ltd. is one of the world’s largest producers of animal feed and livestock.
