Cemex is a Mexican cement and building materials company which holds the distinction of being the world’s second-largest of its kind, behind only LafargeHolcim in Switzerland. Their main headquarters are in San Pedro, Mexico, although it has distribution in more than 50 countries around the world. Cemex was formed in 1906 when it was launched under the name Cementos Hidalgo. In 1931, it merged with Cementos Portland Monterrey to form Cementos Mexicanos, which quickly became known simply as Cemex. Today, the organisation operates on four continents, with 66 cement plants, 2,000 ready-mix-concrete facilities, 400 quarries, 260 distribution centres and 80 marine terminals. Combined, the global operations employ more than 42,000 people worldwide. As of fiscal end 2018, Cemex earned approximately $14.4 billion in total revenue. The percentage of their total product sales is 45 per cent cement, 39 per cent ready-mix and 16 per cent aggregates. They earn 26 per cent of total revenue from each of the United States and Europe, 24 per cent from Mexico, 14 per cent from South America, Central America and the Caribbean, and the remaining 10 per cent from AMEA. Cemex has an annual production capacity of 93 million tonnes of cement.
