One of the 500 largest companies in the world, the Bolloré Group engages through its three business segments: transportation and logistics, communication, and electricity storage and systems. Headquartered in Puteaux, France, the company was founded in 1822 and is controlled by the Bolloré family, who maintain a majority share of the Group’s stock.
Originally, Papeteries Bolloré, a paper manufacturer started by Nicolas Le Marié, the company came under the direction of Jean-René Bolloré in 1863, who was a nephew of the founder. After Nicolas Le Marié’s passing in 1870, the Bolloré family assumed ownership of the business and expanded manufacturing. The company’s famous Odet-Cascadec-Bolloré (OCB) brand of cigarette paper was created in 1911, spurring the business’s growth throughout the 20th century.
The company entered the energy, shipping and other sectors in the 1980s to the end of the 20th century, under the leadership of Vincent Bolloré, who became the firm’s CEO in 1981. In the early 2000s, the company divested in much of its tobacco interests, fuelling expansion into logistics, communication and, notably, a significant share of advertising giant Havas. Today, the Bolloré Group controls entertainment behemoth Vivendi with its 26 per cent ownership and has invested heavily in its electric storage solutions business through the company’s Blue Systems segment.
