Tyson Foods is a multinational food processing operation based out of Springdale, Arkansas in the United States. With 2018 revenue coming in at just over $40 billion, Tyson Foods ranks as the largest food processing operation in the U.S. and second in the world, behind only JBS from Brazil. Tyson Foods is responsible for such household brands as Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm, Sara Lee, and Ball Park, just to name a few. The company was founded by namesake John W. Tyson in 1935. His operation began when he heard chickens were selling for more in the northern states than they were in Arkansas. He drove 500 chickens to Chicago and earned enough of a profit to keep going. Today 20 percent of all chicken, beef, and pork in the United States is produced by the more than 121,000 Tyson Food employees. Tyson Foods experienced a boom of international expansion in the 1990s. Seeking to secure a foothold overseas, Tyson Foods opened operations Asia, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Rim. In December 2017, Tyson Foods made a move into the plant-based meat market with a 5 per cent acquisition of Beyond Meat. The company currently ranks 80th on the Fortune 500 list for American companies.
