The Parks are the founding family of the construction holding company Doosan Corp., which operates through its infrastructure support business and consumer and service business divisions. Founded by Seung-jik Park in 1933, the company is Korea’s oldest conglomerate.
Park began his career as a travelling salesman, eventually opening his own shop in 1896. During the early 20th century, he served as a member of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, later launching Korea’s first cosmetic product in 1915, which was developed by his wife, Jeong Jeong-suk. He renamed his company Doosan Sanghoe in 1946. Park’s son, Too-pyung, inherited the business after the death of his father in 1950.
Too-pyung expanded the business, establishing, among others, Dongsan Construction, Yoonhan Industry and acquiring Korea Glass and Hapdong News Agency. Too-pyung was elected chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1967, a position two of his sons, Park Yong-sung and Park Yong-maan, would also hold. Throughout the 80s and 90s Too-pyung transformed the company into a multinational conglomerate, with emphasis on consumer goods, manufacturing, trading and construction sectors.
Currently, Park Jeong-won, grandson of the founder, is Doosan Group’s Chairman and also serves on the board of Doosan Bears, Inc.
