Orient Overseas (International) Ltd. (OOIL) is a Hong Kong-based container transport and logistics services company with operations in over 85 countries and regions. It has an annual revenue of over $6 billion. OOIL was founded in 1947 by Tung Chao-yung.
Operating China’s first international merchant fleet since 1947, OOIL capitalised on the advent of container transport in 1969, taking delivery of the largest containership ever built in 2017.
At the time of the company founder’s death in 1982, OOIL managed a fleet of over 140 ships. Tung’s sons, Tung Chee Hwa and Tung Chee Chen, ran the company until its acquisition by COSCO Shipping Holdings Company Limited in 2018.
The high-profile, $6.3 billion acquisition made COSCO the world’s third-largest container shipping line.
