Organización Soriana SAB de CV is a major Mexican grocery and department store retailer. It was founded in 1905 by Don Pascual Borque when he opened a fabric business in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico.
In 1920, the business expanded and incorporated wholesale merchandise. Brothers Francisco and Armando Martin Borque took over the business, expanding to multiple locations over the next several decades. In 1968, the company inaugurated the first “Soriana Centro” shopping centre, a model that the company has followed to this day.
The company was first listed on the Mexican stock exchange in 1987, and by 2000, had opened its 100th store. The company branched out from retail to convenience stores in 2005 under the name “Super City,” which led to their purchase and the integration of 198 Gigante self-service stores two years later.
Its 2010, “Express” format investment focused on easing financial stress and product accessibility for small-scale, socioeconomically-underprivileged communities.
The company is led by a substantially large management team to cover its myriad of store formats and construction. It has also invested heavily in community-oriented initiatives, such as a partnership with the Food Bank of Mexico.
Organización Soriana has offered significant aid to the Somos Familia por Mexico program to help rebuild communities after earthquake destruction in 2017. Soriana eventually doubled the initiative’s collected contributions to achieve 13,488,373.67 pesos in aid funding.
