The Morattis are the family behind Saras, the Italian energy producer and refiner based in Sarroch in the Mediterranean. Saras was founded by Angelo Moratti in 1962. His two sons, Gian Marco and Massimo, became the face of Saras when their father passed in 1981. Gian Marco became the head of the company and was well-known for his work ethic and identification with the working class. His personality was a stark contrast to Massimo’s, who was a very public socialite.
Gian Marco pushed several technological advancements for the company, upgrading much of its equipment for maximum efficiency. He also strove to bring the company into the renewable energy market with the creation of the Ulassai Wind Farm. When the European energy market fell on shaky footing during the 2008 financial crisis, the brothers opted to bring Saras to market with an IPO. As a result, Russian investors stepped in and strengthened the company.
Gian Marco’s death in 2018 meant that Massimo would become CEO, thrusting him into sole leadership of the company. Massimo was perhaps most known for his side project as the former owner of the Inter Milan Football Club, for which he divested his last shares in 2016.
