The Møller family is one of the wealthiest and best-known families in Denmark due to their ownership of the Maersk Group. The Group was built on the foundation of the shipping industry, dating all the way back to 1904. Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla is a fourth-generation Møller family member who has chaired the family foundation (which owns the Maersk Group) since 2012. She is widely considered to be one of the most powerful women in Denmark. The family business was founded by Ane’s grandfather, Arnold Peter Møller, and her great-grandfather, Peter Mærsk Møller, as a shipping operation in 1904. The two World Wars proved to be an expansion opportunity for the relatively new business. Between the two wars, the company grew from being the fourth-largest in Demark to being the largest. After the German occupation of Denmark, A.P. Møller was forced to run the operation from the Unites States. A.P.’s son, Arnold Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, was born in 1913 and joined the business in 1940. He assumed the role of Chairman and CEO upon his father’s passing in 1965. He stayed on as CEO until 1993 and as Chairman until 2003. Upon his death in 2012, his youngest daughter Ane assumed the position of Chair. The family’s net worth was listed to be $21 billion at the end of 2017.
