Kering S.A is an international luxury group founded in 1963 by Francois Pinault in Paris, France. He remains an honorary chairman of the group that now controls world famous fashion brands including Gucci, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga, to name a few. In 2018, the company reported revenue of US$15.3 billion, which was up by more than 26 per cent on the previous year’s results. Originally created as a timber and building company, they began repositioning themselves in the luxury goods market in the 1990s, particularly with the acquisition of Au Printemps SA, a department store chain which also held a majority interest in mail-order clothing brand La Redoute. In 1999, a 42 per cent acquisition of Gucci Group NV set them on the path toward being the multi-brand luxury group they are today. In 2001, the company signed partnerships with emerging designers Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney and bought the majority of the remaining shares in Gucci, reaching a 99.4 per cent stake in the Italian luxury brand. Until then known as Pinault-Printemps- Redoute, the company changed its name to PPR officially in 2003 – a name which lasted until March 2103, when Kering was adopted, a reference to the Pinault family’s region of origin in Brittany.
