Om Prakash (OP) Jindal was the patriarch and founder of the Jindal Steel and Power company, the early precursor to the massive JSW Steel Limited. OP started with a small bucket manufacturing company as he transitioned from farming. From there he quickly expanded into steel. He founded a pipe unit called Jindal India in Hisar in 1964. OP made his life out of Hisar, eventually representing the region as a member of the legislative assembly before becoming Minister of Power. OP passed in a tragic helicopter accident while in office.
During his political career, his sons Prithvaraj, Sajjan, Ratan and Naveen took over leadership of JSW Steel and the company’s other holdings. Since then, Sajjan and Naveen have taken the lead in the company. Naveen controls Jindal Steel and Power, while Sajjan is in charge of JSW Steel. Despite operating in the same sector, the brothers’ relationship is amicable.
Naveen
has followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a parliamentarian for the Congress Party as well. That role has landed him in controversy as investigations into local coal deals has tarnished his image. Sajjan’s holdings in steel surpass his brother and his reputation for being ambitious may put him in the position to rise to the top of the family’s holdings group.
