Industria de Diseño Textil, S.A., more commonly known as Inditex is a Spanish-based clothing company which holds the distinction as the world’s largest clothing group. Founded in 1985 and headquartered in Arteixo, Inditex’s flagship operation is the Zara line of clothing stores. Other chains that fall under the Inditex umbrella include Zara Home, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Oysho, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius and Uterqüe. Combined, Inditex operates more than 7,000 stores in 96 markets worldwide. As of year-end 2016, Inditex earned approximately €23.311 billion in revenue and employs more than 171,00 people. The group’s history dates back to the 1960s when founder Amancio Ortega began working in the clothing industry. In 1975, Ortega and his wife, Rosalia Mera began making and selling their own clothes from home before eventually opening their first Zara store in 1975. To produce their different clothing line, Inditex works with 1,824 suppliers and 7,210 factories worldwide. Of those, 57 per cent of their factories are located relatively close to the Group headquarters in Arteixo. Inditex is involved in all every stage of the clothing manufacturing process, including design, manufacturing, logistics, and sales. Inditex has eschewed the franchise model and instead prefers its stores to be corporately owned. They have franchised stores in countries where foreign ownership is prohibited.
