Owners of Shimao Property Holdings, the Hong Kong-based developer with projects in more than 80 Chinese cities. The company was founded by Hui Wing Mau, who became an Australian citizen in the 1990s and whose net worth is estimated at over $11 billion.
Hui Wing Mau grew up in the Fujian Province of mainland China in a family of extremely modest means. He moved to Hong Kong in the late 1970s and began working and investing in textile factories before opening one of his own in 1988. After China changed its policy restricting hotel proprietorship, Hui Wing Mau became the country’s first owner of a private three-star hotel. Hui Wing Mau and his family then moved to Australia and invested in the Australian real estate market. They later returned to China to invest in the Shanghai and Beijing real estate boom.
A player in the world of politics, Hui Wing Mau made headlines for his political contributions in Australia. He is also a member of the distinguished National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body to the central government. Hui Wing Mau currently serves as Shimao Property Holdings’ Chairman. Hui’s son, Jason, is Vice Chairman of Shimao Property and his daughter, Carol, is Chairperson of the company’s Shanghai holdings.
