Spanish owners of construction giant, Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC). Headquartered in Barcelona, the company was founded in 1944 by Ernesto Koplowitz.
After his death in 1962, Ernesto’s youngest daughters, Esther and Alice Koplowitz, inherited a controlling stake in the company that they ran together from 1989 until 1997. Alice sold her shares in the company to her sister for $800 million and focussed on investments in other businesses, such as the steelmaker, Acerinox, the electric utility, Iberdrola, and the banking group, Banco Sabadell. She currently owns hotels and real estate properties in Europe and America through her management company. She is reported to be the second richest woman in Spain with an estimated worth of over $3 billion.
Esther remains FCC’s vice president and a Board of Directors member. Her daughter, Alicia Alcocer Koplowitz, is Chairwoman of the company’s subsidiary, Cementos Portland Valderrivas. Esther’s second daughter, Esther Alcocer Koplowitz, is Chairwoman of the FCC Group. Both daughters are known for their philanthropy. Alicia’s charitable foundation sends Spanish students to study in England and the U.S., and Esther was awarded France’s Legion of Honour in 2012 for her charitable work.
