Bloomberg L.P. is an information and technology company that provides economic and financial news and research through its Bloomberg Professional, Bloomberg News, Bloomberg Radio and Bloomberg Businessweek divisions. Michael Bloomberg co-founded the NYC-based company in 1981 with Thomas Secunda, Duncan MacMillan and Charles Zegar.
By 1982, the Bloomberg Professional Network provided data, analytics and other financial information to thousands of subscribers globally. The company’s technologically innovative “Bloomberg Terminal” became a mainstay for traders and workers in the financial field. In 1990, Bloomberg News was added to report on government, law, energy and sports. In the following years, Bloomberg grew into a multibillion-dollar news and information company, with syndicated content in over 440 world newspapers and more than 315,000 subscribers in 174 countries. The company’s support of open-source software led to contributions in projects such as Apache Solr, Apache Hadoop and OpenStack.
In 2015, Michael Bloomberg returned as the company’s president and CEO after serving as the Mayor of New York City. Bloomberg generates yearly revenue of more than $9 billion and employs over 19,000 people globally.
